Let\u2019s start with basic definitions (Source: Webster\u2019s):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Reward<\/strong> &#8211; money or another kind of payment that is given or received for something that has been done or that is offered for something that might be done<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prize<\/strong> &#8211; something offered or striven for in competition or in contests of chance<\/li>\n<li><strong>Award<\/strong> &#8211; something (such as a prize) that is given to someone for being excellent or for doing something that is admired<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Awarded vs Rewarded, what is the difference?<\/h3>\n<p>Remember the old \u201cWanted \u2013 Dead or Alive\u201d sign?&nbsp; The reward for producing said person, no matter their state of \u201caliveness\u201d, was typically some amount of cash.&nbsp; In other words, \u201cyou\u2019ve done a particular thing that we wanted done &#8211; here is your <strong>reward<\/strong>, for retroactive work\u201d.<\/p>\n<h4>A reward is more in line with compensation, than it is with recognition.&nbsp; It\u2019s not bad, but it\u2019s the natural and expected outcome of completing a specific task.<\/h4>\n<p>Have you ever gone to the county fair, or a carnival?&nbsp; Throwing rings over bottles, trying to throw a ball into a hole that is technically big enough, but basically impossible to throw a ball into?&nbsp; How about the Ping Pong ball into a fish bowl game?&nbsp; These are games of chance, and let\u2019s face it, your skill level doesn\u2019t have much to do with your success (although I was pretty solid last year throwing footballs through a hoop, where I won a giant stuffed animal for my 5 year old \u2013 can you say H-E-R-O?).&nbsp; Sometimes you\u2019re better lucky than good.
