One way to show employee recognition is with a recognition letter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is an Employee Recognition Letter<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>An employee recognition letter is a way for employers to recognize, in writing, their employees&#8217; great work. This can be formal or informal and from managers, leaders, or peers.<\/p>\n<p>These letters can also be handwritten or digital. Although handwritten letters tend to have more sentimental value, many people will still save a thoughtful email or message.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why Write a Recognition Letter<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Employee recognition today is more important than ever. Between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terryberry.com\/blog\/5-ways-to-retain-employees-during-the-great-resignation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Great Resignation<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terryberry.com\/blog\/what-is-quiet-quitting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anti-work movement<\/a>, companies everywhere have been struggling to retain and engage their employees. But research points to employee recognition as a possible solution.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Forbes found that companies with effective recognition programs have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/joshbersin\/2012\/06\/13\/new-research-unlocks-the-secret-of-employee-recognition\/?sh=1a2a48695276\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">31% lower voluntary turnover<\/a>. Another study found that employees are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quantumworkplace.com\/future-of-work\/importance-of-employee-recognition#:~:text=Organizations%20with%20formal%20recognition%20programs,need%20to%20prioritize%20employee%20recognition.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2.7 times more likely<\/a> to be highly engaged when they believe they&#8217;ll be recognized for their work.<\/p>\n<p>Yet many organizations are still missing this opportunity. According to a Gallup analysis, only one in three workers in the U.S. strongly agree that they received recognition or praise for their work in the past seven days.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2016\/05\/recognizing-employees-is-the-simplest-way-to-improve-morale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">82% of American professionals<\/a> feel they aren&#8217;t adequately recognized for their work. Consider which format is best for your letter<br \/>\n<\/strong>Depending on your company, you may have an established system in place to determine the best medium for your letter. If not, consider writing a note by hand, typing a letter, emailing, or sending a message through a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terryberry.com\/blog\/social-recognition-software-what-is-it-and-why-do-you-need-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social recognition platform<\/a>.\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<strong>2. Greeting and Opening Statement<br \/>\n<\/strong>Considering your relationship and level of familiarity with the recipient, greet the them accordingly. This may be with &#8220;Dear ____,&#8221; or simply address them by their first name.\n<p>Then mention your intentions. State broadly that you&#8217;d like to thank them for contribution. This will help the recipient understand quickly that the intentions behind the letter are positive and can potentially put them at ease.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<strong>3. Write the Body of the Letter<br \/>\n<\/strong>This is where you can (and should) get specific. Consider the incident that sparked the letter and describe why this was significant. Discuss how this type of work impacts the company as a whole and helps you work towards achieving certain goals.\n<p>It&#8217;s important to not only thank the person for what they did, but expressing how it plays a role in the bigger picture helps create a sense of purpose in their work. This is a critical aspect for building employee engagement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<strong>4. Conclusion<br \/>\n<\/strong>If you&#8217;re considering this person for a promotion, this would be a good spot to mention so. Then conclude with one final thank you and sign your name. But a better option is, &#8220;Thank you for the quick turnaround on the sales presentation! It was incredibly helpful during our meeting and helped us get the sale.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be Encouraging. <\/strong>Sending a recognition letter is also a way to show that you&#8217;d like this type of work or behavior repeated in the future. So be sure your tone of voice is encouraging and enthusiastic.
