They’re on the road before sunrise. They spend sleepless nights planning the future of the business. They crunch numbers and make the hard decisions. They’re the motivation behind all of our greatest work, and sometimes the pesky thorns in our sides. They’re our biggest cheerleaders and our best critics, the ones who hold us accountable. They’re our bosses. They spend 365 days a year being bosses (well, maybe not on weekends or much-deserved vacations), but there is only one official day dedicated to them: Boss’s Day.
Boss’s Day 2017 is October 16
Renowned poet Robert Frost once said: “By working faithfully eight hours a day you may eventually get to be boss and work twelve hours a day.”
As employees, we often miss this. “We do all the work,” we grumble to each other, hunched over our keyboards, desks, or workbenches under the glare of office or factory lights. Yet we fail to realize that often our bosses put in just as many, if not more, hours than we do. These hours can go unnoticed.
At Terryberry, we are in the business of helping other businesses show appreciation to employees. Employees thrive on appreciation, but what about our bosses? When was the last time you told your boss that she did a great job leading the team on a project, or that hiring your new coworker, or for that matter, you, was a great decision? Bosses (like cats) are people too.
Leading can be a thankless job, so in honor of Boss’s Day 2017, here is a short list of ways that you can turn that around.
- 1. Brainstorm with the team and pitch in on a group gift. Tailor it towards one of your boss’s interests or hobbies to make it meaningful.
- 2. Plan a surprise party or luncheon in the break room. Everyone has to take a lunch break, right? It’ll make your boss feel special, and won’t cut into precious work hours.
- 3. Decorate the workplace for the occasion. Balloons, streamers, flowers – the possibilities are numerous. Keep it tactful and simple, or play it up big, whatever suits your boss’s personality the best.
- 4. Try something creative. For example, if your boss has a good sense of humor, present him or her with an anonymous “suggestion box” that the team put together. Inside, instead of “suggestions” your boss would find cards and notes of appreciation.
However you decide to celebrate boss’s day, remember that a simple word of gratitude or a “Happy Boss’s Day” wish goes a long way. Now get back to work.
